On display were three 5 min length movies on a large-scale video projection and a multi-screen TV display installation, running in a constant loop. The single-channel HD video projection “J 2 Manhattan & Back 24-7-365 Part 1, 2 and 3” is made entirely of photo stills. Jankūnas took these photos on the train every day between the two locations for more then three years. The hundreds of photos are organized and displayed side by side on three vertical interchangeable slides. They display the changing scene on one subway car bench through the duration of a year. Watch videos here “J 2 Manhattan - The Eternal Traveler Syndrome in a Circular Motion” is an installation of 12 flat TV screens featuring a constant circular motion of arriving and departing trains. VYTENIS JANKŪNAS - STUCK ON THE TRAIN / PAKELEIVIS
Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius - 2015.11.20–2016.01.06
Solo exhibition of Vytenis Jankūnas features photographs made by the artist while traveling through New York via the subway – from Queens to Manhattan. At first sight these photographs appear to be simple documentation of his journeys, while their aesthetics and the print technology create an illusion of classical photography. In reality every image has been created using a method of multiple exposure – the single image has been digitally composed from between several and dozens of different shots. The artist composes several of these multi-layered images on the same sheet, in this way complexifying the perception of time and situation. Time becomes yet another traveler of this train and alongside the author of the photographs wonders through the images: it stops, vanishes or reappears in the little details of the image.
VYTENIS JANKŪNAS - STUCK ON THE TRAIN / PAKELEIVIS
Embassy of Lithuania in Washington, D.C. - June/September 2015
One man show of a series of suspenseful photographs “Stuck on a train”. The photographs capture the traumatic situation of an "eternal wanderer"; wanderer who jammed himself in a constant migration that is paradoxically sedentary. This is an smaller scale intro to the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius show. Photographs here are traditionally framed to match an exhibition space prewar classic style.
VYTENIS JANKŪNAS - WHERE IS MY FUCKING EXPERIENCE?
Courthouse Gallery in Anthology Film Archives, New York City, 2001.
First solo show in New York City mostly featuring paintings and drawings on newspaper from "Where Is My Fucking Experience?" series. "Where Is My Fucking Experience?" is about the difficulties of starting a completely new life as a stranger in a new place, having to build his life from scratch again. The paintings reflect the endlessly repetitive task of looking through the newspaper in search of employment.
